The Foam-Karve System
The Foam-Karve system was developed to provide custom-made individual seating and is particularly beneficial for clients who are susceptible to complications from pressure injuries. This is because the Foam-Karve system is designed to remove pressure points and provide pressure relief over the whole contact area. The system is manufactured by first by taking a mould of the users body. The internal profile of the mould is then captured and used to produce the cushion. Replicating the clients profile in a foam block using a multi-axis cutting machine does this. This machine permits highly complex and accurate shapes to be made. The cushions are manufactured from a variety of foam types depending upon the level of support and pressure relief required. When the fit to the client has been confirmed the cushion is fitted with an external shell. This shell provides a structure to allow cushions to be mounted more readily onto a mobile chassis such as a wheelchair or buggy. The external shell is also used to provide a disguise to the client’s asymmetry. Finally the cushions are fitted with straps as appropriate and a waterproof membrane to protect the cushion together with a removable washable cover. When seat and back cushions are supplied it is normal to interface them separately to facilitate the adjustment of orientation between the cushions. The cushions can be used with a large range of devices such as wheelchairs, buggies and static seating frames. When fitted to mobility devices Tendercare Ltd recommend that a stability test be performed to determine the whole combination is stable in normal use. Since the cushions are bespoke items they can be manufactured in many shapes and sizes providing a lightweight but rugged and practical solution to day-to-day requirements. Our own manufacturing and upholstery departments are fully equipped to ensure that all cushion systems are manufactured to the required specifications. Our colourful choice of optional fabric covers offers practical solutions to complement today’s lifestyle. |
